This video (produced inhouse by the AJEH team) plays out a true story of a girl (whose parents could not afford to send her to school and is therefore working in the fields) joining Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital’s ‘Football to Eyeball’ education programme. AJEH provides girls from rural areas free boarding; education, vocational training and formal academic qualification as an Optometrist; employment; and finally, an opportunity for a better quality of life. AJEH uses playing football as one of the mediums to show society that the traditional stereo-types which undermine opportunities for (particularly rural) girls can be overcome for the better. For example, the idea of girls playing football breaks the stereo-type that football is a boys-only game, that girls should not play outside and should not wear shorts. Also, it builds up the girls’ self-confidence, team work disciplines, competitiveness and ambitions. The success of the programme is now emboldening AJEH to embark on an even more ambitious initiative to create 50% of the future leadership of AJEH from these girls, as well as to make some of them role models for other similar background girls to achieve true social change….all this while pursuing the mission to eradicate curable blindness in Bihar by 2022 by empowering women to achieve this.
