An “Intaglio” is an engraved or incised figure in a hard material. The shapes of the gems cut in Rome or for the Romans do not differ much from those of the Hellenistic Greek world. Circular stones are perhaps less common and oval ones rather broader. The subjects chosen for engraving were notables, generals and emperors. Heads and figures of divinities are common, especially those most favored by the Romans or appropriate as signet devices like Fortuna.

Ancient Egyptian Necklace The ancient Egyptians adored jewellery and loved to wear a variety of necklaces and collars made from a huge range of materials.

Of course, only the wealthy could afford gold, silver or precious stones, but shells, wood and bone were more readily avaliable to those on a more restricted budget.

Wealthy Egyptians could afford to buy beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery, but even those who could not afford the works of lesser craftsmen could employ their own ingenuity to make lovely pieces with which to adorn themselves.

In art the upper classes and the gods are almost always shown wearing a significant quantity of jewellery as a mark of their status.

This particularly relates to collars and necklaces made from precious metals as these pieces of jewellery were often given as gifts by pharaoh to loyal supporters, making them a great source of personal pride.

In biographies inscribed on the walls of their tombs, successful Egyptians are not slow to boast of every ocassion that their king rewarded their actions with a gift of a gold necklace!

Ancient Jewellery: A Link to Vanished Civilizations



Antiquities specialist Hannah Solomon looks at a selection of stunning pieces that draw a direct line between ancient cultures and the ways in which jewellery is made and worn today

‘I love that ancient jewellery provides a window onto ancient techniques and gold work,’ says Antiquities specialist Hannah Solomon. ‘I also think it’s amazing that you can see that styles haven’t changed that much — earrings that would have been worn in the 4th century B.C. in Italy by the Etruscans are quite similar to how we wear earrings today.’

The specialist goes on to look at some standout pieces from the Antiquities sale at Christie’s New York on 25 October. These include a pair of Etruscan gold ear studs from the late 6th century B.C.

‘The Etruscans were master gold workers,’ she explains, highlighting the tightly fitted beading (known as granulation) and tiny wires (filigree) which are fashioned into spiral shapes. ‘These would have been worn by inserting them into the ear and putting a pin behind them, so it’s very much a modern composition and something we see today with ear studs.’

Solomon also shows us an exquisite Greek olive wreath fashioned from hammered and rolled sheet gold that dates from around the 4th century B.C. ‘Olive wreaths would have been used to crown the winners of contests. We don’t believe that these were worn. We think that they were ceremonial, perhaps used in a funerary context.’ The fact that some of the leaves on this wreath have been burned suggests that it was placed on a funeral pyre.

This Celtic gold torque from the 4th century B.C. is made from hammered sheet gold, but what makes it quintessentially Celtic are the differences in its design: Greek and Etruscan motifs such as florals and palmettes have been created in raised relief and abstracted so that they turn into faces with spiral eyes and elongated noses.

Ancient jewellery, Solomon suggests, is a wonderful way to get involved with antiquities. ‘There are so many things that are hard for us to understand, be it religion, social structure or politics. But ancient jewellery is quite relatable.’

We are proud to commence with the Sir Richard Ground Collection of British and Continental Bronze Age items, probably the best assemblage to come to market for more than a decade.

Following the success of our December 2014 sale we are pleased to welcome back auctioneer Lindsey Gundersen, a celebrity TV presenter and newsroom anchor who has a considerable reputation as an actor and presenter. Lindsey will be auctioning our Roman, Byzantine and Viking gold jewellery on Thursday 12th; and our Greek, Western Asiatic, Medieval and Post-Medieval gold jewellery on 13th.

Lindsey will be joined on Friday by Peter Bufton, who will conduct the sale of Western Asiatic antiquities. Peter was at various times head of several departments at Christies London, and eventually a director of the company; he was later Vice-President of Sotheby’s in New York. A noted specialist in Chinese jade and Japanese ceramics, Peter has developed his career as an independent Far Eastern art consultant.

Clients may be interested to learn that the specialist celebrity sections of our December sale were a great success. Lindsay’s top-selling item was Lot 744, the Robert the Bruce seal matrix which fetched £151,250. Our other celebrity auctioneer, Sean Kelly of the TV series Storage Hunters, realised £47,795 for Lot 382, the Viking box brooch. A short promotional video of the December auction, including the sale of both of these items, is currently available to view from the front page of our website.

In an effort to provide more information to bidders and vendors, we have added an absentee bid-counter to the website for each auction. This offers a running total of the number of bids placed directly with us, and their total value. The seminar presented by Lindsey Gundersen was also recorded and the content can be viewed from our website.

Last but not least I would like to welcome John Cherry ​FSA ​as one of our Specialists. John is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a former Keeper of Medieval and Later Antiquities at the British Museum, where he worked from 1964 to 2002. John specialised in the culture of medieval Britain and its European context, publishing many finds and acquisitions such as the Savernake Horn, the Talbot Casket and the Dunstable Swan Jewel. His many other professional appointments include: Member of the Treasure Valuation Committee (2006-14); Director of the British Archaeological Association (from 1977 to 1982); Trustee of the York Museums Trust (from 2002 to 2008); Vice President of the Society of Antiquaries of London (from 1996 to 2000). He is presently a Trustee of the Emery Walker Trust. John has published a number of medieval-themed books, including ‘The Middleham Jewel and Ring’, ‘Medieval Decorative Art’, ‘Medieval Crafts: A Book of Days’ and ‘Goldsmiths: Medieval Craftsmen’. He has also contributed regularly to Antiquaries Journal, The Burlington Magazine, and the Journal of the British Archaeological Association. He is currently at work on a book about Dr Richard Rawlinson’s (obit. 1755) collection of seal matrices held at the Ashmolean Museum.

The first evidence of the manufacture of jewelry in ancient Egypt dates back to the 4th millennium BC, the pre-dynastic period.

As with other forms of Egyptian art jewelry design followed strict rules to fulfill its religious role. Any change in the representation of religious symbols resulted in a loss of protective value. Jewelry has also indicated the social status of an individual. It is not desirable to modify the designs of all objects such as royal cartouches or crook and flail.
